After the recent mediatic bravado by the US State department that conditioned its belated legal obligation to the evacuation of a refugee Camp in Diyala province of Iraq, the situation has evolved into a humanitarian time bomb.
A committee of 4000 European lawmakers issued a report to the Security Council on the escalating humanitarian crisis in two Camps that house members of the pro-democracy opposition to Tehran, MEK.
The report which has been prepared in 10 sections, after reviewing the events in the past three months in two camps of Ashraf and Liberty, presents urgent and necessary requirements for the conclusion of relocation of the residents to Liberty in 10 and 5 articles respectively to the Security Council and while appealing for the Councils’ support.

Council of Europe Condemns Camp Prison: Latest on Camp Liberty-Ashraf

The Council of Europe has issued a statement on the lack of lack of humanitarian and human rights standards in Camp Liberty and has urged the Iraqi government to implement the minimum guarantees demanded by the residents, including the removal of all armed units from the interior of the Camp.
The text of the statement reads:

·          [15/03/2012]  PACE’s Political Affairs Committee has repeated its call to the Iraqi authorities to stop turning Camp Liberty – a site near Baghdad where around 800 members of an Iranian opposition group are now living – into a prison. In a statement adopted yesterday, the committee called for armed units and surveillance to be removed from the camp, as well as free movement for its residents and improved conditions, including access to medical services, lawyers and UN monitors. The complete text of the Council’s statement:

Following the statement made in January and owing to the fact that

unfortunately no improvement has been made, the Committee on Political Affairs

and Democracy of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe calls on

the Iraqi authorities to stop turning Camp Liberty into a prison. It also calls on

the UN Secretary General to ensure the minimum guarantees required by the

camp residents.

In spite of the lack of humanitarian and human rights standards, to date, 800

Ashraf residents have been moved to Camp Liberty in order to find a peaceful

solution. But this camp is suffering from a serious shortage of drinking water and

electricity. Open sewage has made the area terribly polluted and the danger to

human health and many of the trailers are extremely badly damaged, making

them unusable. Liberty residents are not allowed to leave the camp. They have

no direct access to medical services nor to lawyers. There is a police station and

nearly 150 armed Iraqi forces equipped with machine guns in this very limited

area of half a square kilometre in which 3400 people have to live. Several

surveillance cameras and eavesdropping devices have been installed in the

camp, the output of which has been passed to the Iranian authorities to threaten

the residents and their families.

The Committee urges the Iraqi government to implement the minimum

guarantees demanded by the residents, including the removal of all armed units,

surveillance cameras and eavesdropping devices from the camp; resolving the

infrastructure problem, particularly regarding water, electricity and sewage;

providing direct access to medical services, lawyers and UN monitors; allowing

free movement or at least increasing the camp area; and providing the security

of all residents until they leave Iraq preventing the arrest of even one resident.

We call on Council of Europe member and observer states to respond positively

and rapidly to resettlement demands of Liberty and Ashraf residents.

• Increasing police stations in Liberty and bringing them closer to residential areas

In the afternoon of Monday March 12 and the morning of Tuesday March 13, Iraqi armed forces opened up a 5-meter wide section of Camp Liberty wall and stationed police forces there. These points are at 10-meter distance from living and rest area of the residents. Therefore the number of police posts have been increased to seven. This is a clear threat to the residents and paves the way for attacking the residents.

Earlier on February 27^th, residents of Ashraf and Liberty in separate letters signed by all of the residents to UN Secretary General, his Special Representative and the US Secretary of State had stated their minimum assurances for the transfer of the remaining residents from Ashraf to Liberty, the most important of which was the withdrawal of police and Iraqi armed forces from Liberty 

 

Camp Liberty: Who Is Responsible For Fraud On Human Lives

The question is simple: Who is really responsible for the situation facing 400 innocent Iranian dissidents? There is no doubt that somebody is responsible for perpetrating that fraud.

A fraud threatening human lives is not often heard about in today’s world. This has however, been the case for 397 Iranian dissidents, who found themselves be tricked when they accepted to be relocated from the place they had lived in for 25 years.

A majority of the members of Parliament in Italy have called for the protection of Camp Ashraf and support for the Iranian Resistance and the Iranian people’s uprisings. Below is the translated text of the declaration:
• In view of the Iranian people’s extensive nationwide uprisings against the religious fascism and their brave resistance against violence and state repression;

• In view of the widespread arrests, rising political executions, including the execution of family members of the residents of Camp Ashraf, who are the source of the Iranian people’s hopes;

Ashraf:US lawmakers: US lawmakers visiting Baghdad say Maliki refuses to allow visit to Ashraf .

The Iraqi government has refused to allow a visiting delegation of US members of Congress to visit Camp Ashraf in order to discover facts about the killing of dozens of the camp’s residents, according to al-Hurra TV.
Al-Sumariya also reported that the US delegation criticized the Iraqi government’s decision to prevent the delegation from visiting Camp Ashraf.

 According to Iraqi news reports, a high-ranking bipartisan delegation from the foreign affairs committee of the US Congress visiting Iraq led by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., who chairs the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight, revealed at a press conference that the Nouri al-Maliki government refuses to allow an investigation visit to Ashraf.

Egyptian party supports protection of Camp Ashraf

Egypt’s al-Majd al-Dastouri party has released a declaration on Camp Ashraf supported by all of the party’s circles and branches in 16 provinces in Egypt and including close to a million members.

The declaration says, “We condemn all of the crimes, killings and anti-democratic treatment by the Iraqi forces and the Iranian regime’s agents in relation to the suppression of freedoms and rights of Ashraf residents.”

Guaranteed protection of Camp Ashraf by UN and U.S.

More than 2 months has passed since the attack on Ashraf which bought pain and anguish to the hearts of millions of Iraqis and people worldwide. We had repeatedly warned prior to the attack that the rights of Camp Ashraf residents were being violated. We say that they have been Iraqi people’s guests for decades and are protected persons under international agreements and laws, especially under the Fourth Geneva Convention. We consider the United States and the United Nations directly responsible for this situation.

Iraqi VP’s spokesperson supports European Parliament solution on Ashraf .

The media spokesman for the Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi has said that the European Parliament’s proposed solution for the residents of Camp Ashraf is an appropriate, just and humanitarian option that respects international and human rights laws. According to the Iraqi news agency, Abdol elah Kazem said Iraqi nationalist forces are in agreement with this solution and have supported humanitarian result. “We oppose any displacement of the residents of Ashraf to another location in Iraq,” he added.
